Fashion Forward Bristol
The British are masters of many things: brewing up a perfect cup of tea, battering an exquisite batch of fish and chips, and charming us Americans with those delicious little accents. During my first day in Bristol, I was pleased to discover something else that the Brits quite excel at: fashion.
At the M Shed Museum we were instantly captivated by the exhibit: “An Eye For Fashion: Norman Parkinson Photographs, British Designers 1954-1964.” The exhibit explored the timeless work of the designers who laid the foundations of the modern fashion industry. We admired the couture worn by our mothers and grandmothers, and pointed out pieces we would still give anything to slip into today. Parkinson was the first photographer to take the models out of the studio and into the real world, letting their beauty and personality intermingle with real world situations.
We decided to embark on a modern day photo-shoot of our own, capturing Bristol’s residents and their current day fashion trends with the backdrop of the city that they know and love. Here are some of our favorites:
With rain an inevitable part of daily life in Bristol, rain jackets and boots go from being merely functional to fashionable. Residents integrate the rain attire into fashion statements, blending them perfectly into their everyday outfits.
The Team Spirit
You know the expression, “He wears his heart on his sleeve”? Well, we find that many Bristol residents wear their team spirit across their chest, in the form of their team’s jersey. This resident had just finished cheering on his favorite football team, The Bristol City, and was celebrating victory (or mourning defeat?) at the local pub, The White Lion.
The (Pooch) Parka
Even the pooches in Bristol were dolled up in their finest attire for their daily strolls. We love a dapper dog.
A good hat can do wonders for any outfit, instantly taking an ensemble from ordinary to extraordinary. The good people of Bristol seem to have this fashion secret figured out.
There was a free-flowing feel to many of the Bristol residents that we’ll call “Bristol Bo-Ho Style”. The fusing of layers, chunky jewelry, and creative clothing concoctions seems to be a statement of the freedom and energy of a new generation.
When looking at most residents, the term that comes to mind is “dress to impress”. Regardless of it being a rainy afternoon, all the residents that we had the pleasure to come into contact with were dressed in that quiet, understated, smart-casual style that leaves one longing for a time when people still made going to the grocery store an event to get dressed up for. Well in Bristol, they still do.
