Noteworthy New Yorkers: Shared Interest
On Monday, April 23rd, 2012, Shared Interest held its 18th Annual Awards Dinner at Gotham Hall, 1356 Broadway, New York, NY. The event was from 6:30P.M. to 9:30P.M. and its honorary chairs were former Mayor David and Mrs. Joyce Dinkins, South African Consul General and Mrs. George Monyemangene, South African H.E. Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool and Ms. Rosieda Shabodien and South African H.E. Ambassador and Mrs. Baso Sangqu.
Shared Interest is a New York based social investment fund whose mission is to help South African’s mobilize their economically disenfranchised communities to sustain themselves and build equitable nations. To that end, Shared Interest works through its partner organization, The Thembani International Guarantee Fund, to help guarantee South African bank loans to low-income communities (and their own financial institutions) to create affordable housing, businesses, jobs and other important services. In addition, Shared Interest collaborates to build partnerships with individuals and institutions in the U.S. that would support these individuals and institutions to be able to comfortably invest in the future of South Africa.
During this special evening, Linnie McLean, the Chair of Shared Interest’s Board of Directors shared why she whole heartedly supported Shared Interest. Ms. McLean expressed that she was a financial services person and that in the past had worked for Trillium Asset Management Fund. This investment fund was one of the first organizations to be socially responsible and on behalf of their clients had invested in Shared Interest as a vehicle to support South Africa’s economic growth. She added that it was her heartfelt wish that Shared Interest continue to strive in a forward direction and continue to support the economic and social growth of the great country of South Africa.
In addition, Mary Beth Coudal, a staff writer for the Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, revealed that the women’s division of The United Methodist Church share the same goals of empowering the lives of the women of South Africa through microcredit as does Shared Interest. For that reason, she was at the event to represent that continued, thriving partnership.
