Recall my strong sentiments on New York City as a cost efficient outdoor museum…a continuous parade of noteworthy people, objects and activity? Well along comes a chance to test my theory, while enjoying FREE admission to some nine world class museums located along Upper Fifth Avenue. File this under a new category….the Best of “Budget Bests!”
On Tuesday, June 12th, between the hours of 6 PM and 9 PM, the City’s largest outdoor festival will take place. This has been an annual event in NYC held on the 2nd Tuesday evening in June for the past 33 years. Aptly described as “the City’s largest block party”, it all kicks off with an official outdoor welcome at 5:45 PM at the 88th Street and Fifth Avenue gardens of the National Academy Museum.
The actual starting point for this glorious event is the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the west side of East 82nd Street along with the compact Goeth-Institute/ German Cultural Center, on the east side of East 82nd Street. Every museum will be open free of charge from 6 PM to 9 PM. Start here at 82nd and move North, i.e. uptown, and you will find all doors are open, step right in! The participating museums–the Guggenheim, the Museo del Barrio, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum, Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and the Neue Galerie–are eager for all to admire their remarkable holdings. The Museum for African Art will also be represented along the mile, but the museum itself opens in September. I fear there is so much fun along the way, you may very well never step inside NYC’s marvelous museums, you will be too busy movin’ and groovin’ on a smiling summer night on an Avenue that rivals the great Boulevards of Europe.
This is a splendid event, full of balloons, kid friendly hands-on art activities, face painting, sidewalk chalking, and some fabulous, high quality street entertainment. A sampling includes Paul Labarbera and Rockbeat Music Group performing at 100th Street; “Juggle Josh” will be at 87th Street; “Daisy Doodle’s Magic” will be featured and DJ Stormin Norman will perform in front of the Museo del Barrio – just to mention a few entertainers. Even a classical pianist will be performing at the Neue Galerie.
Of course there will be fabulous food booths to enjoy a meal while you mix, mingle and meander along this miracle of a museum mile.
Every time I visit a museum on this mile, I immediately light up…within walking distance of my home are the treasures of the world…and on one night a year, it doesn’t cost me a thing!
Again, take the time to enjoy this vibrant procession of people. Watch the world walk by, take joy in the sights, sounds, and smells of this special summer night, even the moon takes on a different hue. Every demographic in NYC comes out for this event…a unique opportunity to delight in both the outdoor and the indoor museums that define NYC, a chance to “Use York City.” And then share your thoughts with us!
