UYC’s Kitchen: Adult Applesauce

Along with PB&J and a baggie of Goldfish, applesauce was a staple in my childhood lunchbox.  When I came across this slightly grown-up version, I knew I had to give it a try (don’t worry, if you’re not a whiskey lover it’s JUST as amazing without the shot, I taste-tested it!)  And with apple picking season in full-swing, what better way to get use out of all those leftover Granny Smiths?!

I love that you can throw this in your Crock Pot overnight, and have a delicious smelling breakfast ready to go when you wake up, no prep work required.  And yes, you can Mason Jar it up for either scrumptious snacks or sweet gifts to give your favorite foodies.

What’s your favorite childhood food, slightly reinvented?

  • personally I like things like this but I also like sweets — so brownies, blondies and interesting tweaks on cookies or ways to work with Ice cream (and cocktails) are always things I am interested in !

  • hey jess, you are COOKING!!! my next recipe (not yet posted) is another childhood memory one – coffee walnut fudge.

  • Wow… I love the touch of whiskey. I will definitely have to try that too – your pics look fantastic.

A childhood favorite re-imagined – it can go the other way. I’m almost embarassed but I really love grilled cheese. Always have. But I am always on the run so what I do (again, I hope this isn’t too embarassing)

    Two slices of grain bread
Two slices of Havarti cheese (from Trader Joe’s)

    1) toast bread (slightly dark)
    2) slap on the Havarti cheese, overlapping in the middle
    3) Microwave for 10 to 15 seconds

Almost tastes as good as grilled cheese! The trick is the quality of the bread and cheese, and not letting it sit too long :)

Mmmm! I, too, adore a good grilled cheese! Thanks for sharing, I’m going to give this a try!:-)

  • Kevin says:

Did you say Goldfish? My weakness.

    • Used York City says:

Right?! I always have a little baggie of them around for snacking, love those things!

  • Smells like autumn! Yum. I had to keep from licking the screen as I perused the recipe. Since I have to consider the kid’s dietary needs + my waistline, I’ll skip the JD.

Thanks for the delectable breakfast idea :)

Maybe it’s just the time of year but I’m not kidding… been dreaming of applesauce this week. Thanks!
