FoodPorn Friday: Anable Basin

Summer in the south was all about the three B’s: buddies, beer, and (the best) BBQ’s.  While I am neither a beer drinker or meat eater (gasp, I know!  what kind of southern girl am I?!), I always looked forward to months spent outside grilling with family and friends on the back porch.

New Yorkers know this is pretty hard to come by in the city…outdoor space is limited, and even if you’re lucky enough to have a fire escape or terrace, there’s some pretty strict laws agains grilling.  Something about fire codes, I think it was?

Enter Anable Basin.  This laid back, open air, prime real estate market somehow got lucky enough to be sprinkled with picnic tables and an outdoor grill.  How a high-rise building hasn’t taken the place over, I’ll never know, but for now, it’s the closest thing we New Yorkers have to our own summer BBQ, and I’m thankful for that.

The menu is simple, simple, simple.  We’re talking burgers, hotdogs, a house salad and corn-on-the-cob for the vegetarians…and of course, beer.  There’s no table service, so be prepared to stand in line when the place is crowded.  The music is great, the venue spacious, and can we just talk about that view?  The south may be home to a lot of things New York is not, but it’s pretty special to see that skyline first hand whenever you want…and now you can do it with a burger in hand.

  • I don’t think the UK is great at BBQ. But, then again, we DO put up with rain (and have to do so). This looks great!

Haha, you sure do! And nothing ruins a good outdoor bbq session than a downpour!;-)

  • Maria says:

Traditions like this are fantastic – something to look forward to all year and that menu… wow!

  • What a great way to BBQ. Here in LA, unless you invite people over, there’s very few of these kind of situations.. We do have lots of great BBQ places (restos) here in LA.. including Beachwood BBQ.. which is great que but also heavy on the salt . It’s Southern in emphasis.

Someday when I get back to your lovely city I would love to check that out, thanks Stevie!
