Jess’s Favorite NYC Gifts!

I’ve been asked numerous times what a great gift is for someone who loves New York, and as someone who does, in fact, REALLY love New York, I’ve compiled a list of NYC specific gifts–all of which I’ve either gotten and loved over the years, or which I’ve given, and had a very happy recipient.

1. A cheesecake from the best cheesecake spot in all of NYC.

While it may have a rap as being a bit of a tourist spot, there’s no other place in NYC where I’ve found cheesecake quite like Junior’s, and anytime I’m in Times Square to see a show or showing out of town visitors around, I always insist we go there JUST for the cheesecake.  So creamy, so rich, so heavenly!  My very favorite is the Devil’s Food Cheesecake, but The Red Velvet and Original are amazing too, you really can’t go wrong here.  I’ve sent them as gifts to family members over the years for birthdays or when I would be missing a key holiday (like Thanksgiving), so they could enjoy a little slice of NYC and think of me;-)

p.s. even with paying for shipping, a delicious cheesecake still comes out cheaper than sending a bundle of flowers–kinda a no brainer!

2. A cool NYC print, framed.

For true NYC lovers, a print of NYC is always appreciated.  I particularly love these artistic maps of NYC, which come in lots of different colors, and look fantastic framed with a white matte and frame.  If you’re gifting, I’d suggest going on the smaller side, that way the recipient can easily find a home for it, be it in their entryway, office, or even jazzing up a travel-themed nursery.

3. A NYC experience.

Granted, this works best for folks who are actually living in the city, BUT I’ve had this be a successful gift for out of towners, too.  For example, whenever I know a family member is coming to the city after their birthday or Christmas, I’ll often gift them an experience I know they’ll love (such as tickets to a Broadway show when they’re in town, a meal out at a swanky restaurant, or a tour that caters to their interests.)  It’s always been a big hit, AND doesn’t further clutter up their home with random stuff.

4. A reusable NYC Greek diner coffee cup, or a package of disposable ones.

These iconic cups are the CUTEST, and for coffee lovers who love NYC, nothing beats the little beam of sunshine felt when brewing your own cup of joe and pouring it in one of these every morning.  While obviously the reusable one is best for the environment, the go-and-throw ones are super convenient for your coffee loving friend who always leaves her reusable cup at work–and then ends up buying coffee out the rest of the week.  Extra points if you pair it with a NYC bag of roasted beans!

5. A book set in NYC.

I never realized before starting my Novels of New York Book Club just HOW many books are actually set in NYC–they totally go SO far beyond The Great Gatsby, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, and The Catcher in the Rye–there’s something out there for every interest.  Usually I’ll read a book and then get a certain person in mind who I know would love it, and will either mail off my copy with a sweet handwritten note scribbled in the front, or keep it super simple and Amazon them a copy with a gift message attached.  For daily ideas on NYC books, follow my Novels of New York Instagram account!  Or start with these 5 I absolutely love.

ANYTHING from NYC’s fabulous Museum Gift Shops (the MET, MOMA – the MORGAN Library Gift Shop is a special favorite of mine) as well as the Gift Shop at the Metropolitan Opera House. So many interesting things in these exclusive gift shops, their merchandise is uniquely indicative of their Museum’s displays and holdings.
