5 Ways To Embrace Winter In NYC

The other day, my 3 year old looked out the window and then looked at me and said (I swear, with a sigh in his voice), “I miss summer, mama.” I get it, little man, I totally do. But with the cold months making up practically half of our existence in this city, it’s best to find ways to embrace the cold, and maybe just maybe, winter itself.

Here’s my 5 tips for making the most out of winter in NYC.

1. Dress the part.

I invested in a Canada Goose a few years ago and have never looked back…or bought another winter jacket, for that matter. Best purchase ever. On top of a solid jacket, don’t forget the accessories: gloves, scarves, hats, and warm socks/comfy footwear. If you’re actually warm, being outside won’t be nearly as miserable.

2. Make your apartment comfy cozy.

It gets dark at 5 and that’s sad, yes. But stock your apartment full of pine scented candles, delicious warm teas (I’m obsessed with Hot Cinnamon Spice by Harney & Sons), throw blankets, and pajamas you look forward to getting into. Break out the board games. Make a pot of soup. Invite friends over to hygge in your home. Enjoy being inside the apartment you pay so much for.

3. Reserve a pile of library books you’re dying to read.

Then read them inside your home at night, after the winter sun had set. Bonus points for leaving up a few strands of twinkle lights to provide a soft reading light. Just because the holidays are over doesn’t mean the joy needs to end.

4. Hit up all the museums.

Truly, summer is for outside activities. Make a list of all the exhibits you’re excited to see this season and then make them happen on an afternoon you have free. Inside = warm. Plus, we have a list of when all NYC museums are free.

5. Get sweaty.

No but really, go to a hot yoga class. Or a sauna/steam room (I love Premier 57, and they always have great deals on Groupon.) Or Russian Bathhouse. Maybe check out the new indoor roller rink at Industry City, Dreamland, and break a sweat under the disco lights. Or do what I did for Augusten and get a mini-trampoline for your apartment and bounce, bounce, bounce until you forget all about summer. Don’t worry, it folds;-)

Odd as it sounds, a walk thru Central Park with its solitude and bare winter branches brings out the best – and most contemplative YOU! Dress warm, of course, and enjoy the solitude this busy city offers in its parks.
