Today I’m happy to welcome to the blog Serena Norr, born in Manhattan and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. She is an Editor-in-Chief for an online beauty website by day, and on weekends, covers local jaunts on her blog The Weekend Jaunts. (One of our favorites here at Used York City–such great inspiration for quick weekend escapes! Definitely check it out!) Serena has lived off the N, 1, L, and F subway lines, and now commutes into the city from Westchester via MetroNorth! Welcome, Serena!
What is your favorite way to #TreatYoSelf in the city?
We are so lucky to have so many awesome places where we can treat ourselves NYC! For foodie/drink treats, I love me a good coffee and massive almond croissant from Stumptown, and cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery are always a good idea. As for experiential treats, I love checking out plays, going to concerts or getting lost in a bookstore.
When do you most often utilize this treat?
Since Stumptown isn’t around me now, I will indulge whenever I find one of their NYC locations. As for the experiences, I try to check out a new show or play every other month (or so). We have some amazing cultural experiences in NYC to take advantage of, and if I could I would be checking them out every single day.
Would you consider this treat to be budget friendly, a sensational splurge, or somewhere in the middle?
For the food treats, I think it’s budget-friendly -as long you don’t do it everyday! The shows and concerts are a splurge but so worth it to support the arts that I think is so important in our tech-driven lives.
It seems to be a trend that #TreatYoSelf days tend to come when there is either something to celebrate or when you need a pick-me-up. In the case of the latter, what words of encouragement would you give a New Yorker who is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day?
NYC can be one of the most incredible places to live but it can also be one of the hardest and loneliest. For a bad day during the summer, I would suggest taking a break from the hustle and check-in with yourself by going on a walk through Central Park. If you want company see if some friends can join you for a picnic. There are also tons of awesome concerts at SummerStage and plays- like Shakespeare in the Park-going on over the summer where you can separate from the madness, be in nature and enjoy a cultural outing. Another thing to do is to visit a museum, walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, talk a walk on the High Line, and, hey, an ice cream never hurt.
