I’m a huge fan of the 10 item wardrobe, first coined by Jennifer L. Scott of Madame Chic fame. Not only does it work sensibly in our tiny NYC apartments (with even tinier closet space), but it also takes one decision away from me each day when I only have limited options to choose from. (Decision fatigue, guys! It’s a real thing!)
Today I’m sharing the fall staples that are on heavy rotation in my wardrobe. Mind you, most of my days in this season of my life revolve around keeping up with my (now crawling!) baby, so the pieces err more on the casual side than they would have in my working (outside the home) days. But I’m totally ok with that;-)
As a child of the 80’s, I rocked these things hard back in the day. And though it’s been a hot minute since I’ve had them in my closet, I have to admit I’m prettyyyyyy happy they’re back on the racks. Paired with a red lip and midi-skirt, you have a go-to fall dinner outfit, but they can just as easily be dressed down with a pair of skinny jeans and Converse.
I love the effortless look of a slightly oversized fisherman sweater…you can throw it over just about anything for an extra layer of warmth and it still gives a slightly more elevated look than, say, a college hoodie.
Chambray, crisp white, seasonal tartan…I’m not picky when it comes to button downs. Again, these are super easy to layer, which make them ideal for the fluctuating fall temperatures, and can be worn slightly wrinkled for a relaxed look or crisply ironed for a more tailored look.
Black Jogger Pants/Jeans
I love blue jeans as much as the next person, but I always feel a tiny bit more dressed up when I’m wearing black jeans or pants, so I’ve been going that route more often than not this season. My favorite kind? Jogger pants. So comfy, I can easily roll around on the floor playing Patty Cakes with little man.
Knee High Boots
I love an equestrian style boot–no matter what trends come and go, I feel like as long as you go with the traditional brown or black, they will always be in style. Plus, they’re warm, comfy, and look much nicer than sporting a pair of sneaks around NYC.
Another important thing…all these looks can pair easily together, making for super simple mixing and matching and layering. Add a few tees, a dress, your preferred outerwear, and accessories, and you’re good to go for the season!
