This contest has officially ended. Congrats to Margaret on winning tickets to The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show!
I can’t count the amount of times I’ve read aloud Eric Carle’s children’s stories over the last decade–first as an elementary school teacher and currently as a mom. They have a magical way of captivating even the smallest child’s attention, and the illustrations are bright and beautiful, pulling you right into the story. When I heard that a theatrical recreation of some of his best stories was going to be taking place at Union Square’s DR2 Theatre at 103 East 15th Street, I jumped at the chance to go. Augusten loved his first theater experience this summer of Pete the Cat, and I was pretty certain this would be no different.
The show is called The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, but features four of Eric Carle’s beloved books within the 60 minutes of show time. It starts with Brown Bear, Brown Bear, moves to 10 Little Rubber Ducks, followed by The Very Lonely Firefly, and finally, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. All of the shows are performed with enchanting puppets, which kept even the littlest pair of eyes in the theater glued to the stage.
Producer and Creator Jonathan Rockefeller states:
Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is the first book I remember reading over and over again, with its vivid and colorful images inspiring me to become a writer and create art. It has been an absolute thrill to take The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show around the world, and to see the absolute delight on the faces of young, first-time theatre-goers as they interact with their favorite books on stage. We are excited to return home to New York to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Brown Bear, Brown Bear as one of Eric’s four stories in our brand-new production.
Absolute delight is so true. Augusten was mesmerized by the actors and puppets and seeing the books he’s heard again and again come to life before his very eyes. Along with the show, the theater features an area in the lobby for children to color caterpillars, buy merchandise, and take their photos on the Off-Broadway show’s “red carpet.” The theater is very intimate, so no matter where you’re sitting, you have a great view. And if you need to take the littles out for a bit, there’s a back door of the theater so you can sneak out without making a scene.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show will be running through February 4th, 2018, and tickets range from $49.50 through $89.50. Lap seats are $10, required for anyone under one year. They can be purchased through the website.
