For the holidays this year, I tried to center any gifts I purchased around two things:
1. something that can be used (as in used up) by the recipient
2. something that is locally produced
One thing that fell easily into both of these categories that all of my family loves? Why, coffee, of course! I spent time researching local New York City coffee roasters that offer subscription services, i.e. the gift that keeps on giving all year long (or essentially as long as you’d like it to!) The key thing with all of the below spots is that they are EXCLUSIVELY based in NYC, meaning that when I sent a coffee package down to my family in Virginia, I could honestly say that the coffee was roasted with love in NY! Below are roasters I tried and loved, and all the information on what their subscription entails.
Oh! And in case you’re thinking a subscription would make a great last minute gift but are worried you won’t get the details sorted in time–have no fear. Coffee subscriptions are tops because you can simply pick up a cute reusable travel mug from any store, and attach a note telling the recipient that their first bag of beans will be arriving in the new year. Easy breezy!
Abbotsford Road is roasted in Gowanus, Brooklyn (where they just opened their headquarters and gorgeous loft style cafe, btw!) Their coffee subscription program allows for bi-weekly or monthly deliveries starting at just $12 for a 12 ounce tin, and you can sign up here! I’m a huge fan of their full bodied and oh-so-smooth Forza roast–honestly, it’s made me PREFER to brew my own cup of coffee rather than go out for one. If you need a jumping off point when deciding what to try, I’d definitely recommend giving that a go!
Another cool thing absolutely worth mentioning about this spot? They have a latte art class! So if you’re thinking of the perfect last minute gift for your coffee (or Instagram) loving friend, a gift certificate for the course could be perfect.
Brooklyn Roasting Company
The Brooklyn Roasting Company is roasted in (you guessed it!) Brooklyn, and has nine locations: Flatiron, and eight locations throughout Brooklyn. (I discovered their Flatiron location this summer and became OBSESSED with the cold brew on hot days, so good!) Their coffee subscription program is only available in a yearly option, and is $250 plus shipping for two shipments of 12 ounce tins delivered monthly. You can pick from four different grinds, and each month they vary the brew sent based on their current best available brews–meaning it’s a little surprise each delivery. Sign up here!
Oslo Coffee Roasters
Oslo Coffee is roasted in Brooklyn and has three locations: Upper East Side, and two locations in Williamsburg. Their coffee subscription program starts at just $13.50 a month, and you can choose to have deliveries every week, every two weeks, or monthly. They have five different brews you can choose from, and thirteen different grinds. Sign up here!
Toby’s Estate coffee is roasted in Brooklyn and has five locations: Long Island City, Brooklyn, Flatiron, Midtown East, and the West Village. Their coffee subscription program starts at $26.50 a month, and we love that they “roast on Sundays and ship on Mondays”, meaning you know you’re in for a fresh bag, every time. You can also get a 2 ounce “try before you buy” sample completely on the house, so there’s really no harm in giving it a go! You can choose from four different grinds, and deliveries weekly or every other week. Sign up here!
Brooklyn Bean Roastery
Finally, I did hit the slight problem of family members who no longer used the traditional coffee pot anymore, and instead, use the Keurig machines. Solution to said problem: Brooklyn Bean Roastery! Now, while these guys don’t offer a subscription per se, they do sell a huge box of their K-cups online via Amazon (right here!), which made for a super easy and quick ordering process (hello, free shipping). A 40 count variety box was $22, and each coffee is named after something very Brooklynite, such as Coney Island Caramel and Brooklyn Bridge Blend. Super cute!
In addition to being great gifts, I also think a coffee subscription to yourself is a great treat to kick off the new year! Not only will you save a boat load of money by brewing your own pot every morning instead of going out for a cup, but if you live in Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, or the Bronx, you can enjoy your favorite Brooklyn roast without leaving your borough. Cheers!
p.s. in case you missed it, we chatted with local New Yorkers and here’s where they get their morning coffee.
